A Market Defined by Capital Gaps, Not Talent Gaps

This report is informed by several years of sustained engagement with Canada’s Black startup ecosystem.

Since 2021, BKR Capital has operated as an early-stage investor and capital platform, observing how Black-led companies are consistently formed while capital allocation remains episodic. BKR’s approach focuses on early conviction in potential outliers and continuity of capital across stages.

Key Insights for 2026

1. COMPOUNDED PULLBACK

A continued decline in VC dry powder available for initial capital investment in Canada is a problem that compounds for Black founders who are getting a lesser share of deployed capital than they were in previous years.

2. PROVINCIAL SWINGS

Most investments into Black founders are still happening in Ontario, at the earliest stages. In 2025, however, Alberta emerged as the top province by total dollars deployed.

3. OUTLIERS DRIVE SECTOR PERFORMANCE.

Over the last five years, Biotech and Fintech accounted for the majority of capital deployed, though this concentration reflects outlier deals rather than broad-based sector depth.

4. VC ACCESS LAGS ECOSYSTEM GROWTH

The amount of capital available to Black founders has not kept pace with the growing pipeline of Black-led startups in Canada.

5. DWINDLING SHARE OF VC DOLLARS

Market share of Canadian VC dollars for Black founders is the worst that it has been in five (5) years. The reversion underscores the degree to which funding remains tightly coupled to the investable capital/dry powder of mission-aligned funds.

6. EMERGENCE OF ALTERNATIVE FUNDING

Angel syndicates and non-dilutive capital were critical funding pathways for Black founders in 2025.
